Real-world history
Rolling farmland just south of Pienza in the Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO-listed landscape. The cypress-topped hill and dirt track by the Terrapille farm were used for Maximus's walks through the wheat toward home, the image that frames the film.
Logistics & accessibility
Admission: The field belongs to a working farm: look and photograph from the track, do not walk into the crops. Cars are not allowed on the track; walk down from Pienza.
Parking & accessibility: Park in Pienza's paid car parks and walk about 10 to 20 minutes down past the Pieve di Corsignano.
Best time to visit: Late May to June when the grain is green or gold, and the hour before sunset.
