Real-world history

State-run trail of about 2 miles round trip, climbing roughly 500 feet up dry sea cliffs to the 1909 Makapuʻu Point Light, which holds the largest lighthouse lens in the United States. The show's cliff and its fictional lighthouse were filmed partway up.

Logistics & accessibility

Admission: Free, open daily. The lighthouse itself is fenced and closed; stay on the trail.

Parking & accessibility: Free state lot at the trailhead; it fills by mid-morning and break-ins happen, so leave nothing in the car.

Best time to visit: Early morning; there is no shade. December to April for whale watching.
