Real-world history
Built from the 1570s as the seat of the Grand Masters of the Order of St John, it later housed Malta's British governors and is now the Office of the President. It also holds the Palace Armoury, the Order's last arsenal.

Admission: Heritage Malta runs paid visits to the state rooms and the armoury; parts can close for state business or restoration, so check before you go. The façade on St George's Square is free to see.
Parking & accessibility: Pedestrian city centre; bus to Valletta City Gate and walk about 7 minutes.
Best time to visit: Weekday mornings; the guard ceremony at the main entrance is a bonus.
