Real-world history
The Order of St John's great hospital, ordered by Grand Master Jean de la Cassière in 1574; its Long Ward was once among the longest halls in Europe. Badly bombed in the Second World War, it was restored from 1978 and reopened in November 1979 as the Mediterranean Conference Centre.
Logistics & accessibility
Admission: A working conference and events venue, so the halls are not freely open. Guided tours of the old hospital are sold together with The Malta Experience audiovisual show, which is based in the building; check the current schedule. The exterior on Mediterranean Street is free to see.
Parking & accessibility: Pedestrian streets; walk about 15 minutes from City Gate or take a bus or taxi to the lower end of Valletta.
Best time to visit: Combine with Fort St Elmo next door on a weekday morning, when there are no big conferences.
