Game of Thrones in Malta

Before the show moved King's Landing to Dubrovnik, Season 1 built it in Malta. Mdina's gate and alleys were the capital's streets, an 18th-century fort became the Great Sept of Baelor, and the west coast and Gozo played the Dothraki lands. This route links every one of those places.

The stops

  1. Mdina Gate — King's Landing's main gate: Catelyn Stark and Ser Rodrik ride in through it (S1E3). Park outside the walls and walk in.
  2. Pjazza Mesquita — Littlefinger's brothel and the street where Jaime's men ambush Ned (S1E5). Three minutes' walk from the gate.
  3. San Anton Palace Gardens — The Red Keep's gardens in Season 1. The public gardens are free during opening hours; the palace is the President's residence and not open.
  4. Fort Manoel — The plaza of the Great Sept of Baelor, where Ned Stark confesses before the crowd (S1E9). The island walk is free; the courtyard opens only on occasional open days.
  5. Fort Ricasoli ⛔ — The Red Keep's King's Gate (S1E3). A working film backlot, not open to visitors: see it from the water or across the harbour mouth.
  6. Mtaħleb Cliffs & Valley — Khal Drogo's camp outside Pentos (S1E1). Open countryside; the cliff paths are unpaved.
  7. Dwejra / Azure Window site — The Dothraki wedding by the sea (S1E1). The arch fell in 2017; the bay, the Inland Sea and Fungus Rock remain.

Planning it

Day 1: Mdina and Pjazza Mesquita in the morning, San Anton Gardens at midday (10 minutes' drive), Mtaħleb for sunset. Day 2: Fort Manoel from the Gżira side, a harbour boat past Fort Ricasoli, then the ferry to Gozo for Dwejra, or keep Gozo for a day of its own.

Most of these places are a long bus ride apart. Our guide to renting a car in Malta covers parking in Valletta, the Gozo ferry and the road rules.
