Valletta on screen

Valletta is a walled grid that a film crew can close off, which is why it keeps getting cast. Fort St Elmo held the prison in Midnight Express (1978) and was dressed as Jerusalem's walls for World War Z (2013) and again for Murder on the Orient Express (2017). Jurassic World Dominion (2022) ran its chase through the streets. Munich (2005) used ordinary Valletta streets for Tel Aviv, Rome, Beirut and Athens.

  1. Fort St Elmo β€” Midnight Express's prison in the old garrison stores; Jerusalem's wall in World War Z and Murder on the Orient Express. Open as the National War Museum.
  2. St George's Square β€” Part of Jurassic World Dominion's chase through the city grid.

  4. Valletta waterfront β€” The harbour edge below the bastions.

Planning it

Don't drive in: park in Floriana and walk through City Gate. Fort St Elmo is at the far tip of the peninsula, about 15 minutes on foot, with the Barrakka Gardens on the way.

Most of these places are a long bus ride apart. Our guide to renting a car in Malta covers parking in Valletta, the Gozo ferry and the road rules.
