Popeye Village and the north

From June 1979 about 165 workers built 19 wooden houses and a breakwater at Anchor Bay, Mellieħa, for Robert Altman's Popeye (1980). It was meant to come down and never did. It is now Popeye Village, the only film set in Malta you can still walk through. Iron Warrior (1987) shot at Anchor Bay too, and Troy (2004) filmed scenes around Mellieħa.

The stops

  1. Popeye Village — Sweethaven. Paid entry to the village; parking above the bay.

Planning it

The best photo of the whole village is free: from the road on the far side of the cove. Ċirkewwa, for the Gozo ferry, is about 15 minutes away, so this pairs well with a Gozo day.

Most of these places are a long bus ride apart. Our guide to renting a car in Malta covers parking in Valletta, the Gozo ferry and the road rules.
